Madhubala made her film debut at the tender age of eight. She worked as a child artist for five years before landing her first lead role at the age of 14 in Kidar Sharma's film Neel Kamal in 1947, in which she played a romantic lead opposite Raj Kapoor, a rising star. Madhubala proclaimed her arrival on the silver screen through this film. She developed into a genuinely euphoric beauty during the next few years, and with the release of the film Mahal in 1949, she became an overnight sensation.

Frank Capra, a well-known American director, even offered her a role in Hollywood. Her father, who was in charge of her work, turned down the offer. She appeared alongside all of Bollywood's legends at the time. She was so popular at the time that she even overshadowed her male co-stars in several films. She appeared in nearly 70 films in total and is a name that will be remembered for a long time.

Madhubala was born to a Muslim family as Mumtaz Begum Jehan Dehlavi. Her father's name was Attaullah Khan who lost his job at the Imperial Tobacco Company in Peshawar and her mother's name was Begum Ayeesha. She had ten siblings, including Chanchal, an actress, and Madhur Bhushan, a playback singer. Pradeep Kumar, Bharat Bhushan, and Kishore Kumar all proposed to her for marriage. In 1960, she married Kishore Kumar, who converted to Islam only for the purpose of marrying her. She died in 1969, after nine years of marriage.

Madhubala passed away on February 23, 1969, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, at the age of 36. Unfortunately, she was plagued by a persistent heart illness that kept her confined to a bed for nearly nine excruciating years until taking her life on February 23, 1969, just nine days after she turned 36. She appeared in almost 70 films during her brief life and is now regarded as one of Indian cinema's most coveted icons.

During the 1950s, her relationship with great actor Dilip Kumar was highly well-known.

On the set of the film Tarana in 1951, she sent Dilip Kumar a love letter in Urdu along with a rose.

Director K. Asif asked her assistant to take her father out and play rummy with him till the scenes were shot because her father objected to her conducting personal scenes.

Her film Hanste Aansoo, released in 1950, was the first Hindi film to receive an "A" certification from the Central Board of Film Certification, indicating that it was intended for adults only.

After 35 years, a digitally colourized version of her most renowned film, Mughal-e-Azam, was released.

Madame Tussauds, a wax museum, dedicated a statue of Anarkali (Madhubala's famed courtesan) on August 10, 2017.
